LEVEL 2  ::  MEDITERRANEAN SEA

THE PATH TO AVALON

[Checkpoint] Dive into the Mediterranean Sea and swim down. You're wearing an oxygen tank so you don't have to worry about surfacing for air. Dispense with four sharks on your way to the sea bed. The most efficient weapon to use is definitely the spear gun, although for some mindless fun hurl a grenade in their direction.

In this part of the level, the jellyfish are lighting the places of interest. Be careful and don't get too close of them, as they will cause you some damage.

Once you've reached the sea bed, turn to face the biggest structure, called the Baldr Temple and locate the entrance on the ground, but leave it alone for the moment.

Treasure #1 - Swim towards the front of the temple and explore the small cavity (as shown here) on the left side to find the treasure.

Treasure #2 - Locate a small building on the left of the temple. The entrance is hidden behind seaweed (as shown here). Follow path, crawl under some rocks on the left and and pick up a treasure.

Treasure #3 - Behind the last building, the entrance of a small cave is almost hidden in the sand (as shown in this screenshot). Swim down and follow the dark tunnel to find a treasure at the end.

Treasure #4 - More or less at the same place, but on the right of the temple, there's a cluster of rocks with a small entrance (as shown here). Swin down and pick up a treasure at the end.

Face the temple, turn right and locate a small building half buried in the sand (as shown here). Swim towards it and find the entrance hidden by seaweed. Follow the hallway to the right and find a handle on a small pedestal. Grab it and find your way out of the building.

Treasure #5 - Before going back to the temple, swim above the cluster of rocks on the left and find a treasure in the corner.

Get back to the pavement and head inside the temple [Checkpoint] until you reach a dead-end. Three ornate circles are carved into the wall. First of all, note that each one of them is made of three carvings : two closed eyes, and one opened one.

Place your handle into one of the circles, and collect the second handle on the floor. Slide it into the last circle. Now, you are facing your first puzzle of the game : the three opened eyes need to converge into the ornate circle of the middle. Pull one handle after the other to achieve this, triggering an ancient mechanism that will open the door.

Treasure #6 - Before passing the gate, swim up in this cave into a narrow tunnel leading to the top of the temple. Halfway through it, pick up a treasure on some rocks. Swim down to the gate.

[Checkpoint] Swim along the tunnel, turn right, then left, then right again : you will reach what seems to be a dead end again, but when you inch closer, a giant tentacle retreats and clears the way.

Treasure #7 - Before going forward, turn back and swim towards the last corner of the tunnel. On the left, pick up a treasure under a jellyfish (as shown in this screenshot).

Swim forward to access a vertical pit and head to the surface. Swim to the small outcrop above the water, then jump up onto the ground.

Treasure #8 - Break a gray vase in the right corner of this room to find out a treasure.

Vault on the rock on your left and pull up to step on the higher one. Get down to the other side and jump into the water.

Treasure #9 - Swim down in the pool and locate a treasure on the ground, behind the ascent.

Go up the ascent on the left to reach the ground. Climb up the block on the left and collect a health pack on the ground. Jump up to grab the next ledge, then jump again to catch the upper one and pull up. Move to the right and perform a jump to the right to grab the ledge around the corner. Shimmy right until you're back to an horizontal pole (as shown in this screenshot). Jump and swing around the pole, then jump again to reach the second one and land on a small outcrop.

Treasure #10 - Break a gray vase in the corner to collect a treasure.

Jump on the block on your left, then jump up again to grab the ledge above. Shimmy to the right, along the wall and around the next pillar. Jump up, grab the upper ledge and shimmy to the right again. At the end, look behind and locate an horizontal pole. You can either swing around it or pull up and step on it. Either way, jump forward to reach the next ledge, shimmy right and turn around the corner.

Drop down twice and carefully land on the ground. Head right to a switch on a pedestal. When you pull it, nothing happens : you will see sparks in the two recesses but the mechanism is stuck as both the fires aren't lit.

Make a mental note of the two pressure plates in front of the switch. You'll have to lower them at the same time to be able to light the fires. Collect a small rock on the floor and place it on the left plate. Repeat the operation to keep the plate down.

On the other side, locate the golden ring decorating the snake statue. Grapple it and pull down the statue (as shown here) to lower the second plate. Now, get on the pedestal and pull the switch : the door opens...

The next cutscene shows Lara holding a camera and entering an ancient cave. Looking at the engravings, she discovers Proto-Norse runes mentioning "the world of mists", which would be Niflheim, the Norse realm of the dead.

NIFLHEIM

[Checkpoint] Follow the hallway and turn right. Climb the block, step on the upper block and jump forward.

Treasure #11 - From this rock, turn to your left and locate a small alcove with three vases (as shown here). Break the gray jar and collect the treasure. Get back on the previous rock.

Hop down to the ground [Checkpoint], ascend the stairs and crawl under the structure. Carefully drop down in the pit and locate a small entrance in the wall (as shown in this screenshot). Follow this tunnel until you reach another room. Drop down to the ground, then climb up onto the block on the right. Perform a jump on the left and stand on the platform to pick up the health pack. Grab the edge of the stairs and pull up.

Treasure #12 - Look to the right and locate a small avse on the ground. Break it and pick up the treasure.

Go up the stairs [Checkpoint]. In the left corner, you can collect a health pack.

Treasure #13 - Turn right and break a jar on the gound to find a treasure.

Head to the big entrance in front of you.

In the next cut scene, Lara enters a huge hall, but the platform she's about to step on is destroyed by a giant tentacle. Looking down, Lara discovers that the tentacle belongs to a kraken, a creature from the Norse mythology.

[Checkpoint] The monster is blocking the door opening to the rest of the temple so you need to get rid of it. Unfortunately, bullets or spears won't kill it.

From the entrance, turn right and grab the small edge on the wall. Shimmy right then perform a jump to the right to grab the next one. Repeat the operation twice (as shown here) then drop down into the hallway. Follow the corridor but do not slide down the slope. Instead, grab a small ledge on the left, shimmy to the right and perform a jump to the right to reach the next ledge. Repeat the operation until you reach a doorway.

You are now on a platform above the kraken. Looking to your right, you'll see that one of its tentacles is coiled around a pillar. Locate the three vertical poles in front of you and jump forward to grab the first one. Climb it, turn around a bit so you'll be turning your back to the second pole. Make sure you're in the right alignment : if you fail this jump, you will fall in the pool at the bottom of this area. Jump from the pole to grab the next one. Climb up, turn around and jump again to reach the third pole. Repeat the operation to reach the ledge on the pillar (as shown here). Do not worry about the tentacle for now.

Notice the platform on the right and the horizontal pole behind it. Shimmy as far as you can to the right and pull up. This is your first adrenaline moment : you're still controlling Lara but time is slowing down. Jump to grab the horizontal pole before the platform collapses.

You can either stand on the pole or swing around it. Either way, jump to reach the right bridge. [Checkpoint] Head right and enter the two story room. You will see a switch that seems trapped by a tentacle. [Checkpoint] Hang from the edge on the left and shimmy to the right. At the end, jump to grab the horizontal pole and swing around it. Then jump and slide down the slope until you reach the ground.

On your left, locate a golden ring. Use you grapple to pull it (as shown in this screenshot) : this causes the pillar to collapse and the kraken retracts its tentacle.

Treasure #14 - Exit the room by the tunnel on the left and follow it until a stairway. Go down the stairs and immediatekly turn left to avoid a kraken's tentacle. Vault on the blocks on the left and break a gray vase to find a treasure. Make your way back to the stairs and go up.

Treasure #15 - Turn left at the next intersection. Destroy a jar on the ground and pick up a treasure. Get back to the two story room with the switch.

Make your way back to the switch by climbing the blocks, sliding the slope and swinging around the horizontal pole. Pull down the switch : the right bridge moves away from the golden disk.

Go back to the kraken room. [Checkpoint] You have to reach the left bridge. Turn around the head of the statue and locate a small ledge on the wall. Jump to grab it, then jump up twice. Shimmy to the left until the end and drop down twice to grab the lower ledge (as shown here). Either drop down or jump left to reach the platform with the switch. [Checkpoint] You can try to pull it, but you'll see that the golden platform is still stuck because of the second bridge.

Treasure #16 - Head behind the chain, between the wall and the pillar supporting the upper platform above the switch. Perform a wall jump to climb up the space beween them. In the small room, break a vase on the ground to collect a treasure.

Locate the ledge running along the wall on your left and jump to reach it. Shimmy to the left, turn around the corner and jump backwards to reach the arm of the statue (as shown here). Make your way to the bridge and enter the small room. [Checkpoint] The switch is stuck here as well. If you look behind the tentacle, you will see a cog with a golden ring on the wall. Throw your grapple to catch it and pull the cog (as shown in this screenshot). Activate the switch : the kraken retracts its tentacle and the left bridge is moving away from the golden platform.

Treasure #17 - Locate the pillar in front of the switch and jump to perch on it. Jump forward on the next platform, then make your way down to the ground via the ledges. Exit the room and follow the tunnel. At the intersection, turn right and follow a dark corridor with a few vases at the end. Break the gray vase to find the treasure.

Make your way back to the central switch above the kraken and pull it down : this will raise the platform and the camera will show you two fragmentary rings in the chains holding it. Shoot one ring (as shown here) then the other to release the golden platform.

In a next short cut scene, the platform smashes the kraken, killing it and freeing the door as well.

Locate a golden ring on the left of the platform, catch it will the grapple and rope down to the ground. Pull the switch to open the door then follow the hallway.

Treasure #18 - Dive into the pool and swim to the left. Pick up a treasure underwater.

Treasure #19 - Swim to the right and locate a stairway leading to a platform. Collect a treasure under the surface.

[Checkpoint] Head through the gate, go up the stairs and head forward until you reach a dark pit. Climb the wall on your left, then head right until you reach the other side (as shown here). [Checkpoint] Follow the corridor and go up the stairs until you reach the second pit. You have to traverse the beam but be careful : if Lara loses her balance, you have to stop moving until she regains it. Head forward and crawl under the collapsed blocks.

[Checkpoint] Enter the next room and head towards the closed gate.

In this cut scene, Lara discovers a monumental statue of Thor, the Norse God of Thunder and a strange gauntlet shimmering on a small pedestal. She remembers that medieval manuscripts allege that Thor needed two gauntlets to hold his legendary hammer, Mjolnir.

THE NORSE CONNECTION

[Checkpoint] Look left and right and locate the two pressure plates on the ground. Then head right, walk towards the vertical pole and climb on it. Jump to reach the small entrance in the wall and carefully drop down in the next room. First, pick up the health pack near the opposite wall. Grab a small rock and step on the pressure plate, facing the door. Launch the rock through the doorway (using the Grenade button). Repeat the operation with the second small rock.

Step on the pressure plate, head forward and roll to get out of the room before the door shuts down. Stack the two small rocks on a pressure plate then face the gate and locate the golden ring. Use your grapple to catch it and move to step on the other pressure plate. You will notice the grapple line can wrap around obstacles and the hook won’t detach (as shown in this screenshot). When the two pressure plates are down, the gate is unlocked. Use your grapple to pull the ring and make the gate fall. Enter the room.

The next cut scene shows Lara entering the gauntlet room. While the gauntlet turns into dust when Lara touches it, a small artifact casting blue light remains. As Lara takes it and places it on her left hand, the stone projects a halo with the shape of a gauntlet around it. While she understands the connection between this place and the legend of Thor, Lara still doesn’t see why her father thought that this place was related to Avalon. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have time to investigate : a squad of mercenaries are standing behind, aiming at her. At the command of their leader, Lara puts her hands on her head and turns around. Before she even understands that neither weapons nor bribery will help, she's is knocked out. When she recovers, she realizes that she doesn’t have the artifact nor ammo for her guns. Before blowing up the way out, the last mercenary tells her that Amanda Evert sends her regards.

Treasure #20 - Approach Thor's statue and look to the left to locate a few vases. Break them and pick up the treasure.

[Checkpoint] Head out of the gauntlet room to the room with the pressure plates. Enter the room on the right.

Treasure #21 - Explore the narrow alcove on the left and break a jar to collect a treasure.

Vault on the dark rock fallen on the ground. [Checkpoint] Climb up and follow the tunnel until you reach a room with vertical poles.

Treasure #22 - Locate a very discrete vase near the entrance and break it to pick up a treasure.

Treasure #23 - Traverse the next room and locate some vases in the left corner. One of them contains a treasure.

Grab the first pole on the right and climb up. Then jump to reach the broken one hanging from the ceiling. Climb it as high as you can and jump to reach the platform (as shown in this screenshot). Head left and locate the top of a pole in front of you. Jump forward to perch on it then jump again to grab the vertical pole hanging from the ceiling. Jump onto the broken platform.

Locate the broken pole on your right and jump to grab that one. Climb up, then carefully jump to perch on the top of the pole behind (as shown here). Jump forward to reach the last pole and finally jump to the tunnel. [Checkpoint] Follow the corridor and crawl under the collapsed rocks. [Checkpoint]

Treasure #24 - As you're crawling under the last rock, turn left and break a gray jar to get the treasure inside.

When you enter the kraken room, a short cut scene will show you the mercenary running away.

On the platform, head to the right and locate a golden ring on the ceiling. Use your grapple to catch it. Swing and jump to reach the other side (as shown here).

Treasure #25 - Destroy a jar on the right of this platform to find a treasure.

Head left and pick up a health pack along the wall. Vault on the lower block and grab the small ledge. Shimmy to the left and jump up then pull up to stand on the upper platform. Head forward, jump to grab the horizontal pole and swing around it. Jump to the next platform, head right and slide down the slope.

Treasure #26 - Hang from this edge and shimmy to the right end. Jump to the right twice to reach a small platform on the other side. Collect a treasure inside a gray vase.

Relic - From this platform, turn right and locate a small outcrop on the right. Jump to reach it and crawl under the rock. In a small cavity, pick up the relic on the floor. Make your way back under the slope.

Enter a dark tunnel under the slope and follow it. On the right, locate a small ledge and grab it, then move right until you reach the ground. Follow to the hallway and go back to where you came from at the beginning of the level : follow the corridor, go down the stairs until you reach a small pit. Do not drop down : look left and locate a small ledge on the wall. Grab it and jump up to reach the upper one. Shimmy to the right, jump to the right to pass the crevice and shimmy right some more (as shown in this screenshot). At the end, drop down twice to grab the lower ledge. Shimmy right, turn around the corners and crawl under the collapsed structure.

Go down the stairs and turn around the corner. Vault on the rock on the left, climb up to the upper one and jump forward. Carefully drop down from the platform and follow the hallway back to the room with the fire mechanism. [Checkpoint] Jump into the water and step on the small outcrop. Go through the doorway, climb up the rocks and pass a second doorway. Dive into the water and find your way back outside the temple (remember that the jellyfish are showing the way). Once you’re out of the temple, swim up to the surface and get back to Lara’s yacht.

GOD OF THUNDER

[Checkpoint] Jump from the deck the grab the chain of the anchor and climb up. Jump up to gab the metallic outcrop and pull up. [Checkpoint] Then jump up to grab the edge of the hull and pull up to reach the upper deck. Collect a health pack on the ground. Go down the stairs and kill three mercenaries on the deck. From the stairs, proceed forward and walk between the first two containers on the left. You have to perform a wall jump here. To perform this, jump towards the container and immediately press Jump when you hit it. Keep repeating this to climb up to the space between the containers.

Once you’re up, look behind to the center of the boat : there’s a mercenary with a shotgun standing near the balustrade. Unfortunately, he’s on your way, but you’ll have to get closer to be able to fight him. Jump forward to the upper blue container then jump down on the lower one (as shown in this screenshot). The mercenary can’t reach you from there. The easiest way to get rid of him is to throw him a sticky grenade. When you’re ready, jump forward to the blue container, pull up, aim at the mercenary and throw the grenade then jump back on the lower container and watch the fireworks.

Make your way to the second deck and pick up a health pack where the last mercenary was standing. [Checkpoint] Head left. There are two mercenaries standing in this passage. You can either burst in and kill them or just throw a grenade. Head forward and kill another mercenary near the helipad. There are three more mercenaries patrolling around this helipad, so take care of them as well as one mercenary in the right passage. Pick up a health pack near the stairs and go down to the second helipad. [Checkpoint] Get rid of two mercenaries, pick up another health pack near the crates between the two helicopters then follow the stairs to reach the lower deck and head to the stern of the boat.

[Checkpoint] Four mercenaries are guarding the doorway so be careful and do not burst in. Instead, take them one by one, using the sticky grenades and the protection of the wooden crates (beware that the bullets will destroy the crates after a while, so you have to be quick). Pick up a health pack near the doorway. [Checkpoint] Enter the building and get rid of one mercenary standing behind the first crates. Follow the corridor to the stairway, go down and enter the next room. [Checkpoint] Kill two mercenaries guarding the place and follow the stairway.

In the next cut scene, the squad leader appears and shoots at Lara who hides behind a metallic structure. When she looks up, Lara realizes that it’s not an electric box but a gas pipe and that the gas is already leaking. Lara flees and the squad leader is on her heels but the tank explodes an instant later, killing the mercenary instantly.

[Checkpoint] The boat is now damaged and a siren is ringing out. Head forward, go down the steps and follow the corridor. Turn left and go up the steps.

This major cut scene shows Lara sneaking into a room. Upstairs, Amanda Evert is holding the gauntlet from the underwater temple. Amanda complains that the glove is too small for her hand, and a second, feminine voice answers that only Lara can use it now. While Amanda notices that the boat is sinking and leaves with a frustration sigh, Lara enters the room. She sees a winged silhouette from the back, inside a glass container. The creature says she’s pleased and turns around : it’s is Jacqueline Natla, the well-known Atlantean queen. When Lara asks her how the Norse mythology is connected to Avalon, Natla answers that the Dais found by Lara and her mother (as shown in Tomb Raider Legend), are part of a kind of network. According to Natla, Lara’s father wasn’t looking at the right place for his missing wife : Lady Croft was in Hellheim, the Norse version of Avalon. The time is ticking : the locks holding Natla’s container are released, and Natla just has enough time to tell Lara that she will need Thor’s Hammer to be able to enter Hellheim and that the key to find that artifact is in Coastal Thailand. The container starts to elevate, taken away by a helicopter.

REALM OF THE DEAD

[Checkpoint] During this part of the level, you have to find the way out before the boat sinks. You do not have to rush though, as the boat won’t sink while you are still inside. Avoid the flames and the steam springing from the pipes. Go through the only opened doorway and follow the corridor. [Checkpoint] Head left, then right, follow the corridor and go up the stairs. The door will automatically open.

[Checkpoint] Enter the steamy corridor and head forward. The ground is shaking and slowly turning upside down. Turn left, pass the corner and carefully walk forward : crates and trunks are falling from the shelves. At the end of the corridor, a few crates are on fire. Run forward and follow the hallway. You’ll end in an ascending corridor. Locate the few barrels up ahead and start ascending. Get ready for the next adrenaline moment : the barrels fall down. Run or sprint to the right passage to avoid them (as shown here).

The ground shakes and turns again. Follow the passage until what seems to be a dead-end. Be careful with the metallic plates falling from the left. Walk to the left wall and jump up to start climbing the valves. Head right, climb up the ladder and move to the right (as shown in this screenshot). Climb up then jump up to grab the upper valves. Head left and climb up the ladder again. Be careful with the metallic boxes falling from the ceiling. Move to the left, climb up and jump up to reach the upper metallic ledge. Shimmy left and pull up.

[Checkpoint] Follow the corridor until the next ladder. Climb up and jump up to grab the valves. Once you’re at the top, move left to reach the metallic ledge and shimmy left (as shown here). Locate the metallic beam under Lara and drop down on it. Traverse the beam. At the end, jump up to grab the edge of the wall and jump up again to reach the upper part. Pull up and head to the doors.

The last cut scene of the level shows the sinking cargo. Lara opens the door and stands on it while Amanda escapes, holding a rope hanging from a helicopter. Lara shoots at her several times and one of the bullets harms Amanda’s cheek. Scared, Amanda throws the gauntlet away, into the Mediterranean Sea. Holstering her gun, Lara performs a swan dive and catches the artifact. While the helicopter flies away, Lara surfaces and steps on her yacht.
